Young family papers, 1768-1870.

Papers chiefly consist of correspondence and property records. Property records (1768-1857) include a land grant (1768) to Philemon Waters of land on the Enoree River (S.C.); and indentures, deeds, contracts, a bond, plats, and other documents pertaining to plantation lands along the Enoree River in Spartanburg and Laurens counties. Correspondence (1861-1865) includes letters of Confederate soldier James H. Young from Harpers Ferry (Va.) and elsewhere to his uncle Rev. John N. Young and family regarding camp life, troop movements, health and conduct of the soldiers, family matters, battles in Virginia, and other matters; and letters (1865) of Charles S. Young to his father John N. Young and sister Lizzie regarding guard duty at a military prison in Florence (S.C.), the approach of Sherman's army, fortifications at Florence, and other matters. A letter (21 June 1865) from "Patton" [D.W. Patton?] to his brother William [William L. Pressley?] discusses the behavior and movements of freedmen going to and from Columbia (S.C.) and speculates on the effects of their emancipation. Papers (1836-1859) of John N. Young include diaries (1836-1840); memoirs (fragment, 1837) of college life at Miami University (Oxford, Ohio); a notebook (1836) containing philosophical reflections; printed material; a certificate of licensure (1840); and correspondence of John N. Young and his wife Elizabeth E. Young with each other and members of the Pressley family in Georgia concerning family and personal matters, religion and Presbyterian Church affairs, financial affairs, and other matters. Correspondence (1869-1908) of E.P. McClintock at Laurens (S.C.), Columbia (S.C.) and elsewhere consists of letters (1869-1870) between him and his fiancee (later his wife) Lizzie Young during their courtship; in addition, there are a few later letters of other Young family members mainly concerning family matters.
